Like you I'm a former grad of Agassiz high (class of '58...or was it 57? it all gets bleary). Got the hell outa town as fast as I could, spent the last 30 odd years in Toronto, teaching in an art school, occasionally showing photos in TO, Vancouver and hey! even the Agassiz Library. I've kept in touch with the area with yearly returns to my family's house in Harrison which I've kept all these years. But which I am now putting on the market, and sticking around for the duration (said market being the pits). And kinda liking it - not Harrison so much (way too dark) but Agassiz with its open skies and sun when there is any. I also like the fact that it isn't surrounded by malls. So, 'you can't go home again' has been on my mind too. Sorry to say I haven't yet read your work (only saw the Library notice in the Observer this morning) but will for sure. Despite my sharing your sentiments on the budgetary waste that is occurring (grumble, grumble, grumble); being angry about the diversion of transit from regular users for the games (bitch, bitch, bitch), and being disgusted at the proliferation of corporate sponsors advertizing throughout the city (insert a lot of expletives), the festive atmosphere of downtown is starting to excite me. I think I'll be wandering around taking in some of the free stuff on the weekend. It's unlikely, though, that I will be doing the Wilco scene as I will likely be done with the crowds and not willing to negotiate public transit afterwards.
