Dear Robert:

I want to tell you this little story:

One of the pleasure of retirement is that, unlike the likes of you, you never have any "real" deadlines, other than the Ultimate One with the Grim Reaper. And that can be ignored, more or less, since one is always ignorant of its arrival.

Thus, in an attempt to recoup some of the losses that all pensioners, and indeed the whole world, other than those who work for Goldman Sachs, suffered in the crash of a year ago, I am spending the winter in Thailand, in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

Last night, after my sybaritic oil massage, I wandered into a used bookstore nearby and started, as I love to do in used bookstores, to mooch around and wait for something to attract my attention.

Imagine my utter surprise when I noticed the name Wiersema. Hmm, I know that name...and there standing proudly was the uncorrected book proof ("not for resale") of Before I Wake, which I had not got round to reading in the spacious Remains of my Day.

Bought it immediately (100baht, about $3) and went off to a Thai restaurant and started to read it. I was fascinated and read a large chunk before supper was served, and I carried on reading with the supper. I look forward to completing the reading and seeing where it all goes after I have finished this Swedish mystery story by the late Stieg Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.

What a small world. But how on earth did your novel (especially in that format) get to be in Chiang Mai, Thailand?

Perhaps I have pointed your mind in the direction of a new short story.

Al the best, Trevor
